The owners of this 1920’s era “stone miners cottage” in historic downtown Golden contacted us to seek a remodel of the existing home, as well as a second floor addition. The challenges were many, including low ceilings, an outdated kitchen with limited workspace, old cabinetry and a bathroom door opening directly into the kitchen space, a small narrow living room and tiny bedrooms with small closets.
The design the owners chose increased the home’s size by approximately 60% and incorporated sophisticated and functional conveniences while maintaining the necessary historic elements of the exterior. We began in the kitchen with a complete demolition and reconfigured this area, including a vaulted ceiling with heavy ridge beam and enlarged the workspace including more cabinets and countertops along with a large island and pantry accessible by a sliding “barn door”. In the living area the floor was raised to eliminate a step from the kitchen and improve flow, while eliminating a wall and doubling the great room space along with a modern bath and open staircase to the new second floor.
Arriving upstairs at a central loft area, the relocated and enlarged master suite with walk-in closet and luxurious 5-piece master bath met the client’s lifestyle much better. Additionally, two more bedrooms and a bath upstairs resulted in expanding the homes total from two to four bedrooms, serving the owners current and future needs in an intelligent and beautiful way.
